David Ireland's play CYPRUS AVENUE first performed at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin in 2016 is both darkly hilarious and horrifying.  Eric is an Ulster Loyalist living in Belfast who believes that his five-week-old granddaughter is, in fact, Gerry Adams.  Is he insane? He paints a beard on the baby to enhance the likeness!  In a series of often very funny scenes, in conversations with his psychiatrist, his wife and daughter and a loyalist paramilitary, the latter is especially funny, this provocative play explores the frightening tangle and complexity of Ulster loyalism. It's a wonderfully theatrical piece which starts deceptively as a comedy and reaches a violent and shocking climax.   The central role originally played by Stephen Rea is a terrific part with some enormously long speeches which must have been the devil to memorise.
