Where I am this week is away - to Wanaka about three hours drive.  A pretty lake and mountains - and probably cold if not snow.

Taking quite a number of books - The Swan Thieves that I meant to write about and haven't, The Luminaries to get back into, a little Simon Brett crime novel, something by Peter Roebeck on cricketing characters (I think he committed suicide so it might be reading with a background of depression to consider, and others I have forgotten.

If there's snow are you going skiing, Caro? Lovely little town with a spectacular lake only beaten for views by Wakatipu. It is another country in the South Island - such a contrast to the hectic life in Auckland.

We weren't skiing that time, Castorboy, but tomorrow we are off to Wanaka again, for our son and dil and grandson to go skiing.  We will be expected to watch at least for one day, and will be babysitting little Hugo some of the time at our motel hopefully.

Will be busier than last time with the start of the skiing season.  Though we found that the restaurants were quite busy even then, so will presumably be worse now.  (Wakatipu and Queenstown might be more beautiful though that's arguable, but we found Wanaka so much more peaceful - driving slower and more considerate, fewer people generally - that it was much more enjoyable for us.

Be back next Friday, all going well.

Cheers, Caro.

I am away again for a week - this time up to see our New Plymouth son, dil and two wee grandsons.  Bit of a mission getting there from Dunedin and usually very expensive flights, but this time we are driving 6 hours to Christchurch first so not so bad.

Ski trip went well in that the bus didn't fall off the sides of the road, we didn't crash on icy roads on the way there and back, and I didn't fall over the ice.  As well the four year old learnt to ski and had a great time at Ski Kindy.  And I got two books finished.

I envy you going to New Plymouth, Caro. You'll probably visit the brand new Len Lye Art Gallery. Of course seeing the grandsons is the highlight of the trip. We're lucky that our grandchildren are all within a 20 minute ride from us.

I am just using this old thread to say I will be away for the next few days.  Off to Christchurch to stay with our son, who has recently shifted there.  And his wife and sons, Peter and Henry.  I am taking with me the crime novel I am reading, a Phil Rickman one that I have already mentioned, Alan Bennett's A Life Like Other Peoples (ditto) and The Old Curiosity Shop (re-ditto).

Might also choose another one.  See you soon.
