I've just read through Simon Armitage's 'Out of the Blue' (Enitharmon Press. 2008). It consists of three poems written as responses to the anniversaries of three separate concflicts. The first two were commissioned by Channel 5,
and the third by BBC radio.
'Out of the Blue' is written from the point of view of an English Trader working in the North Tower of the World Trade Centre on 9/11. This is a moving and frightening pooem.
'May We Allow Ourselves a Brief Period of Rejoicing' is a joyous poem on the sixtieth anniversary of VE Day.
'Cambodia' is radio poem lamenting the horrors of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge.
All three poems are in Simon Armitage's best vein.  Immediate, moving, and full of his characteristic, superb use of imagery and varied verse forms.
