I hadn't read a book by Rosemary Sutcliffe, outstanding writer of historical fiction for young readers, for many years until I downloaded her SIMON onto my Kindle Fire.  I enjoyed it a great deal. It's an exciting and involving story about two teenage boys who find themselves on oppposite sides in the English Civil War. The eponymous Simon is a Parliamentarian and Amias is for the King.  Sutcliffe's story is set in Devon and is location specific.  She's obviously done her homework, and it all seems absolutely authentic.  The battle scenes are very well done, and RS convinces you that this is how it happened and that this is how young men of that time behaved and thought. Apart from the well-drawn imaginary characters, real-life people  pop up from time to time, including Oliver Cromwell and General Fairfax. I wonder which side I would have supported in he Civil War.  Parliament probably, but I would have drawn the line at executing King Charles. This is an engrossing read with a light touch, and there is much humour. I must read more Rosemary Sutcliffe. I remember reading her 'Eagle of the Ninth' and 'Knight's Fee' years ago. And her retelling of the Tristan and Iseult story.
