Whitcoulls, one of NZ's major book retailers, has a list of the 50 top books chosen by children.  They are in order:

Geronimo Stilton series
Cherub: The recruit   Robert Muchamore
Matilda   Roald Dahl
Rainbow Magic series   Daisy Meadows
Eragon  Christopher Paolini
Alex Rider: Stormbreaker   Anthony Horowitz
The Adventures of Captain Underpants   Dav Pilkey
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory   Roald Dahl
The BFG   Roald Dahl
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy  Lynley Dodd
The Twits   Roald Dahl
A series of Unfortunate Events  Lemony Snickett
Zac Power series   H I Larry
Utterly Me, Clarice Bean   Lauren Child
Charlotte's Web  EB White
The Cat in the Hat   Dr Seuss
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief  Rick Riordan
Deltora Quest: Forests of Silence  Emily Rodden
Artemis Fowl   Eoin Colfer
Horton Hears a Who!   Dr Seuss
Cookie   Jacqueline Wilson
Fantastic Mr Fox   Roald Dahl
Candyfloss  Jacqueline Wilson
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe  CS Lewis
James and the Gaint Peach   Roald Dahl
Judy Moody  Megan McDonald
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas  John Boyne
My Sister Jodie   Jacqueline Wilson
The Witches   Roald Dahl
Chinese Cinderella   Adeline Yen Mah
Skulduggery Pleasant   Derek Landy
Tomorrow when the War Began series    John Marsden
Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging  Louise Rennison
The Famous Five series   Enid Blyton
Clues: The Maze of Bones   Rick Riordan
Inkheart   Cornelia Funke
Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism   Goergia Byng
George's Marvellous Medicine   Roald Dahl
Lola Rose   Jacqueline Wilson
Just Crazy!  Andy Griffiths
Mortal Instruments: City of Bones   Cassandra Clare
Green Eggs and Ham   Dr Seuss
Northern Lights   Philip Pullman
Beast Quest series   Adam Blade
Holes     Louis Sachar
Maximum Ride: Angel Experiment   James Patterson
Jane Blonde, Sensational Spylet   Jill Marshall
The Gruffalo    Julia Donaldson

Interesting to see so many Roald Dahls here.  This is a list put out generally by older children as they will be more likely to write and vote than younger ones.  So no Where the Wild Things Are, Not Now Bernard, Berenstain Bears, The Tiger who Came to Tea (which I still saw prominently on the Whitcoulls shelves the day I picked this up), etc.
Nice to see Dr Seuss books still popular.  Apart from Hairy Maclary I can't see any NZ books here and there are some very good NZ writers for older children and young adult readers.

Cheers, Caro.

I think in any list of children's books I made Roald Dahl would feature heavily. He was a very important part of my childhood.
