Reminds me of a joke about a woman similarly afflicted who is seduced by a certain Scandinavian god. The punchline is: "You're Thor - what about me?". You can guess the middle bit.  Smile

Not surprisingly I scored only 9 out of 20 but at least I know I need a spell checker and always use one.
Spellchecker says OK !

I got 16 out of 20, which is about average for me.

19. I can never spell the final word (won't say what it is for those yet to do the quiz), no matter how many times I try to learn it I have a panic whenever I need to write it, but oddly, that wasn't the one I slipped up on this time.

Not bad - I managed 19 out of 20, getting the thousand years wrong.

What drives me absolutely nuts is to see teachers ignore incorrect spelling in my 12-yr old grandson's school work, the consequence of which is that he thinks spelling doesn't matter.   The final straw came the day I found the history teacher had

corrected
a word that he had in fact spelled correctly in the first place.   I wanted to correct her correction but my grandson would not let me do so, even though he accepted that she had been wrong!
Funnily enough, the teachers of Maltese, Italian and French seem very keen on spelling but the English teacher is very lax.

Another memory has returned to me - I never thought of myself as a bastard at school, but it dawns on me that I could be quite cruel at times. A student music teacher on a placement once 'corrected' my accurate spelling of the word 'symphony's' to 'symphonies', and I approached her after the lesson and explained her mistake. I hasten to add this wasn't customary behaviour, but I must have been annoyed. I don't know if she became a fully fledged teacher in the end, but I can't have helped her confidence. What an arse I was...

Gareth, I think you were quite correct. A teacher should be expected to know simple spelling - and it doesn't matter whether or not she is a student teacher or a fully fledged teacher.

Ah, big relief to someone who thinks they are a good speller.  20 correct.  I was in two minds over the last one, which is a bit of a disgrace for someone involved in surveys for years.  I would find it much harder to spell these out loud; I can 'see' easily the correct spelling when it is written down, especially if there are alternatives which are obviously wrong.

I don't have any trouble with the centenery year one - it has the excessive number of letters, as does the one about a place to stay.

I think spelling is over-rated really and it doesn't bother me much if teachers aren't perfect spellers.  I am a very good speller and a lousy teacher; my husband and sons are not so great at spelling but they can teach.  And I know which the kids would rather have in front of them.

Cheers, Caro.

I'm in shock I got 17/20 which is much better than I thought I would get!

Caro - One of my daughters teachers at primary school was lousy at easy words once she was pointing out my daughters errors and made a mistake herself so I couldn't help myself I corrected her comments as she had done my daughters. But then again she was lousy at spelling AND a lousy teacher as well!
