My wanderings in the wilderness of forgotten plays reminded me of W.S.Gilbert's ENGAGED from 1877 which I read yesterday. It's a very silly farce about a man who is engaged to three women at the same time. Virtuoso plotting. Very Victorian, and interesting because of that. I have actually seen this play twice, once at the Bolton Octagon, and at the National Theatre about 40 years ago. Apart from his work with Sullivan Gilbert wrote dozens of other plays, including one about Rosencrantz & Guildenstern, mostly unperformable today.
