I've referred in the past to Time magazine's list of the greatest novels since 1923 (which incidentally is the starting date because of the first publication of Time, not because of Ulysses). Can you name the authors of the books on the list?

I must give thanks to Verity, sometimes of this board, for introducing me to Sporcle. It's a superb way of wasting time. The only criticism I might make is that the quizzes are sometimes too US-centric, which may be a problem with this one. I'm very proud I got 82 authors, but missed a couple I feel I should have known.

Tips: if the clock doesn't start counting down when you click 'Start', reload the page and wait until it has finished loading. And after you finish, click on "See the most missed" to check your results against those of other people. Have fun!

I got 71, with about 3 "kick yourself"s. I could see one author's face, but totally blanked on the name! I counted 23 that I simply had no idea of.

That was great fun. Managed 63 (I'm counting one as correct even though I couldn't get the spelling right - won't say which though!) which isn't bad as there were a few that I hadn't heard.

The two I was kicking myself about were Native Son, which I ought to have remembered as I came across it when I did a bit of reading around James Baldwin after reading Go Tell It on the Mountain last year, and Death Comes for the Archbishop, which is a book with such a memorable title that one shouldn't forget its author. The others I didn't get I was quite clueless about, though.

Yeah, the spelling's a bit of a nightmare - I never can remember how to spell that "on the road" fella for a start! And I panicked a bit over the Polish-American dude that wrote 'Being There' (as well as the one on the list).

How clever you are!  I only got about 40, though that's partly because I start to panic when the time limit comes up.  (Would be hopeless in a crisis.)  And my mind just went blank with Steinbeck and Scott Fitzgerald and a few others.  And some I could manage Christian names but that was all - Malcolm Lowry and Jean Rhys were two of those.  Did you check the percentages that people get right/wrong?  I did get Iris Murdoch's one, but then I have read lots of her books.

I should have checked how many I have actually read.

Cheers, Caro.

Good fun - I got 85, it's amazing how you dredge things  up in your mind that you didn't realise you knew!  And of the ones I didn't get, I didn't know some of the authors, and would never have guessed the ones I did...

Interesting list too.

Got 77. But it wouldn't accept David Wallace (it insisted on David Foster Wallace), and I couldn't spell Nathanael West (why the hell couldn't he spell Nathaniel correctly?) And I can't believe I missed "Under the Net".

I expect it would have taken just "West". I only typed in surnames. Think of all the time you have wasted!

There's another one that challenges you to name all of the Big Read Top 100, if anyone wants to relive that dubious joy: http://www.sporcle.com/games/Caesar/bigread. Maybe I'm just a bigger snob than I was 7 years ago, but it does seem like a lot of dross is in the list.

I'm just as big a snob now as I was then.
