Big Readers Forum Index -> Hello and welcome!
Evie

Welcome to the site!

Hello, and welcome to the new Big Readers site - well done for finding us! †For any newcomers, we are the remnant of a group that began on a BBC messageboard, moved to MSN when the Beeb closed us down, and have now been forced to migrate again - let's hope this site can remain intact for a while! †We are here to share our love of reading - and are determined to keep this board focused on books - general chat needs to be kept to a minimum (but a bit of off-topic banter never hurt anyone!).

Those of us used to using the MSN discussion site will notice a few differences - mostly for the better: we can edit our own posts after we've posted, there is a search facility (hurray!), and the administrators can move messages and threads around if need be, though only to a certain extent - but there is generally much more freedom and flexibility, which is great.

The format is a bit different - only administrators can set up the main categories, unfortunately, but if there is anything you want us to include, do just say, and we will do it asap (unless we have very good reasons for not wanting to!). †But generally, if you reply to an existing thread, we can then move things around and, if it seems more appropriate, start a new, separate thread. †(Hope that makes sense!)

Won't say much more for now - people don't read long messages, I am sure - but I hope you enjoy the new site, and if you have any navigational or other problems, just shout. †I am still finding my way around too, but after initial confusion am now finding it fairly easy!
Chibiabos83

Yes, I hope everyone will soon feel at home. Our masthead-logo-type thing is magnificent. Whose brainwave was that?
Evie

It was Mike's - it's fab, isn't it?  Cool
Chibiabos83

Splendid.
miranda

Hello!

Well done Evie and Mike!  This is great!

I've used this style of board before on a different forum and it is easy once you get used to it.

Thanks for all your hard work you two.    Razz
Evie

Miranda, it was you, on the other board, who put me onto phpBB/MyFastForum as an option, so you should take some of the credit too!  It does seem all seem very accommodating, I am sure it will work better than either of the sites we have previously occupied.
Lizzy Siddal

Quick post just to say that I am l-o-v-i-n-g this board setup!

So to all who spent a lot of their spare time setting it up let me extend

A Big Thank You

Well I'm glad everyone likes it!

Oh you can also add more emoticons if you want to. † I don't know how but I can find out from someone who does....
Baron Morgan

I'm afraid you're going to have to put up with me here as well...  Confused
Evie

Hurray!!   Very Happy
Tristan

Hello, site admistrators your are spoiling us.  Last move meant 24 hour posting and now a search. Cool. Cheers
Ann

On some threads I've just noticed a pleasing little note at the bottom telling me who is on-line here at the moment.  I really like it. Very Happy
joeturner

I have been hiding in the shadows.  I was a member of this site waaay back under another name. Nice to be back.
Caro

Well, welcome here.  Any chance of letting us know how you used to be?

Cheers, Caro.
Chibiabos83

Yes, I'm intrigued too. A few of us also go waaay back, so you may be remembered by those of us with good memories... Welcome!
joeturner

Hi again.  2am and the snow is beautiful.   Joe Turner was once Nighthawks Hopper.
Caro

Oh yes, I remember your name, though not perhaps your interests in reading.  I do gather from your other posts that you are what could be called a mature poster, like some of the rest of us.

Cheers, Caro.
Evie

Hello Joe - great to see you - of course I remember you as Nighthawks Hopper too.  Glad you have joined us! Very Happy
Magic Flutey

Ann

Hello Maginc Flutey, it is nice to see you here. I've read you on the Rebel Board but I don't go there very often.  Very Happy

Hello

Hi Everyone  Very Happy  what a lovely new board!  Sorry it took me an age to get round to posting here; I was very busy earlier in the year with some courses I was doing; one on George Eliot and tuther on family history... but things are a bit more relaxed now.  It's great to see all the familiar names - and a few new ones? - and I'm looking forward to joining in.

Hello Gwendoline, lovely to see you back
miranda

Hi Gwendoline!
Guest

Thanks Simon and Miranda, it's nice to be back on the books board!  I love the avatars... and I want a knitted Dalek now!
miranda

PM me an address and what colour you want and I'll knit you one!
TheRejectAmidHair

Good to see you here Gwendoline - we were wondering where you were!
Guest

Hi Himadri,

Again apologies for disappearing... I'll try not to do so again... somehow I find organising my time online incredibly difficult and once I haven't posted on a particular site for a little while, tend feel a bit awkward about posting out of the blue.

Congratulations on the knighthood of your avatar - I must say I was surprised to hear that because I'd somehow assumed he had already been knighted!

Hi Miranda, thanks for the offer, I'll PM you!

Gwen
miranda

Cool!

I enjoy knitting them but there is only so many I can do for myself!   Razz

Given that Christopher Lee is very tall, he may well be the longest knight of the year.

Er ... I'll get my coat!
Melony

Smile †I especially appreciated that joke made on the summer solstice...

and yes, good to "see" you, Mary Gwendoline!!!
Melony

Did we move again and no one told me?!  Smile I have noticed no one has said anything since Monday - very unusual!  Hope all is well with everyone everywhere and you are enjoying life,
Melony
TheRejectAmidHair

No, we haven't moved ... I guess quite a few of us may be on holiday in summer. I'm away myself next week, but come September, we should be starting on our Good Read discussions - the first of many, I trust!

But having said that, a few more regular contributors would do the board no harm at all.
verityktw

Hopefully it's just a midsummer lull.
Chibiabos83

Past experience suggests that is likely to be the case. Good to have you on board with the Good Read, btw Smile
Evie

As long as it's not midsummer murder.
Melony

I thought the weather must be incredibly beautiful or something, keeping people away from their computers!  Can't wait for the Good Read!
Baron Morgan

I'm back, in any case anybody has noticed my absence, following a major computer crisis.
Caro

I had noticed, and I'm sure others had too.  Any major computer problem here would result in serious nagging till my husband went and got me a new one the same day!

Cheers, Caro.
Evie

Baron, hello!  I did notice your absence - there is proof on another thread somewhere in the depths of the messageboard, goodness knows where!  Glad you have not left us for good, anyway, and hope the computer crisis is fully sorted.
Chibiabos83

Welcome back, goodly Baron. I've been reading you in your absence: http://bigreaders.myfastforum.org/about722.html
Baron Morgan

Hi Gareth, I shall reply on the appropriate thread.
TheRejectAmidHair

Glad to see you haven't deserted us, Baron!
Baron Morgan

Thanks for the kind welcome back, everybody. My computer crashed and I lost everything on it, creating a major crisis despite my relatively good backing up, but I admit I was rather lazy in revisiting all my old haunts. It's good to be back anyway.
Melony

Hello, Baron!  Happy to see you!
janetmp

I have just found you!! I do hope that its going to add something to my life!

Jan
Chibiabos83

Welcome to the board! I hope this is the start of a mutually fulfilling relationship. Do you have any favourite authors? I like Dickens and Nabokov and Philip Roth and Muriel Spark.
TheRejectAmidHair

Hello Jan, and welcome to the board. Itís always good to have a new face around, and it's great to see you (in a manner of speaking, that is!). I hope you enjoy yourself here. Please do feel free to have a good look around, and feel at home.

Cheers, Himadri
miranda

Hi Jan!  Welcome to the board!

I hope you enjoy it.  There is a wide range of readers here and we discuss many different genres.

Hop over to a thread and join in!
Evie

Welcome from me too - great to see a new face!  Just start posting, and you will soon feel at home, I am sure.
janetmp

village duckpond told me about you

Jan

A belated welcome to Big Readers. I am so glad you have joined us all and hope you enjoy it in here.

Fancy any more picnics in the pouring rain in Haverfordwest? You know what I am talking about and I know that by now things have moved on since those days Rolling Eyes
Green Jay

Welcome Jan and Duckpond, and to any and all new members. How nice to have some new "faces" - er...(and there's me never having managed to upload a pretty little pic of myself in any form whatsoever  Embarassed )

I notice we have a couple of new members ~ so welcome to you. I'm amazed at the number of members who have joined but not made any posts, don't be shy, drop us a line, tell us about yourself or what you are reading.
TheRejectAmidHair

Well spotted!

Yes, may I second that. Welcome to this group! Please do tell us a bit about yourselves if you want, and start talking about books as soon as you feel ready.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Me too!

I thought Where or when was already a member - but I must be thinking of a previous incarnation of the board.
janet986w

I'm Janet, a totally newbie to this community.
Nice to see you all and great to be a part of the community. Hope to get help from you, thank!
Caro

Welcome Janet. Do you have particular types of books you specially like?

Cheers, Caro.
TheRejectAmidHair

Hello Janet, and welcome: itís always good to see a newbie here. Please do have a look around, and make yourself feel at home!

Hope to be reading your posts shortly,
Cheers, Himadri

Hello, Janet. Welcome to Big Readers.

Hello Janet, Welcome from the Oldest Inhabitant. Well...I think I am,
Michael.
Caro

Hmmm, might be a race between you and Gino, I think, Michael.  Phrases like 'oldie but goodie' or 'the older you are, the wiser you are' start to make more sense after a certain age, don't they?

Cheers, Caro.

And another welcome Janet from downunder Very Happy
Apple

Hello Janet and a big welcome from me too (albeit somewhat belated looking at the dates!) hello2

What sort of stuff are you into??
amandak695

Hi !
I've just visited this forum. Happy to get acquainted with you. Thanks.
Sandraseahorse

Hello, Amanda and welcome.
Ann

Hello and welcome, Amanda. I hope you'll visit us often. What sort of books do you like?
TheRejectAmidHair

I hope Iím not being unreasonably suspicious here, but there seems to be something a bit fishy going on. Three days ago, we had a new member who told us how great it was to be part of this community, but hasnít returned since Ė not once; and now, only three days later, we have another new joiner (two new joiners in three days is virtually unprecedented!) telling us she too would like to be acquainted with us. And Ė this is what really makes me suspicious Ė both posts contain links to a site called moviesonline.

If you really are genuine Ė i.e.  people who would like to join our community and talk about books Ė then please do accept my heartfelt apologies for my suspicions. But if youíve joined under false pretences to advertise your site, then I really do not think this is at all acceptable.

We welcome genuine newbies: we are always looking to expand what we think is a friendly community. But I do hope we arenít being taken advantage of.
Chibiabos83

People using the internet for purposes of self-advertisement? Well, it doesn't sound very likely...
juliew9855

Hello !
I am also a new member. Would a newcomer be warmly welcome here? Good day you guy !
TheRejectAmidHair

This is getting beyond a joke. How many more new joiners will there be with a link to this stupid site of theirs?
Chibiabos83

I think three in a row means you can delete them if you want. Or you win a prize...
Apple

Is the link put there by them or is just an ad which pops up automatically? I know I have had ad's pop up in that section of my posts before now which have been nothing to do with me, maybe coincidence or a third party? Could be spammers or an automatic generator thing - I know on other sites I have joined you have to type a series of numbers and letters which is written weirdly on the screen to prove you are a real person and not a machine tring to log on and spam the site.
TheRejectAmidHair

The links are on their signature lines, and have quite clearly been placed by themselves. Adverts appear only at the bottom of the last post on a page, between the main body of the post and the signature.
iwishiwas

I agree it's fishy, no posts about books??? Can moderators block them?
TheRejectAmidHair

They were obviously spammers. We can't stop them, as that would mean stopping genuine people who would like to join. We can block someone if they keep posting spam repeatedly, but we haven't had that yet.
Chibiabos83

Actually we did one morning last week, Thursday I think. Four threads in the TV/Film adaptations section started by a newbie, including multiple links to DVD sales websites. They were only up for about 20 minutes before I took them down. A one-off, but it's probably a good idea to remain vigilant.
Apple

Haven't these people got anything better to do?!
Hector

Just a quick question in case anyone else might know - do we know where Evie is at the moment? Is she travelling around Europe still? I note she hasn't been here for a while.

Regards

Hector
Chibiabos83

She's been back for about a week, but is still returning to normal. She will be around presently.
Hector

Thanks Gareth

I too hope Evie's back soon. We are not the same without her.
Evie

I am back, and am sorry not to have posted sooner!  While I was travelling, I found that I couldn't log in to the site for some reason, but now that I am home normal service is resumed.  It is nice to be missed!  I hope you  lovely people are all well.  I will endeavour to start posting book-related posts very soon - have been utterly exhausted since I got back, and writing about what I have been reading has seemed too difficult, but I am feeling much more human now!
Caro

Lovely to see you back, Evie.  I find that whenever I am away it takes quite a while to back into the swing of messageboards and it feels a bit effort to write much.  (I feel that way even if I have just been working for the day - don't know how you people who full-time work ever have the energy for reviews and serious posts.)

Cheers, Caro.
TristansGhost

Hi. Been a fair while put will hopefully pick up my posting again.
Evie

Hurray!  Fab to have you back, Tris!   Cool
TristansGhost

Why thank you Evie.
TheRejectAmidHair

And welcome back from me as well, TG! Hope to see you around here often!
Ann

I like the new image! Nice to see you again Smile
Chibiabos83

Welcome back from me too! Very Happy

Thank you all Smile
