Toll-Free Road

I had a lovely surprise in the post this morning. I have won a copy of Richard Yates's Revolutionary Road in a competition run by the local newspaper in conjunction with Waterstones   Very Happy
A great start to Valentine's Day - will there be any more surprises in store?

Oh, well done Gul I hope that you enjoy it.

Thanks, Luna. I'm sure I wil. I enjoyed Yates's Cold Spring Harbor and a collection of his short stories, so it was on my VTBR list anyway. Now off to the Newspaper Office to pick up the book (I think it's open on a Saturday morning).

Well Done!  Smile

Thanks, Apple. It was only an out-of-the-hat type of competition, so I didn't exactly do anything spectacular!
I now have the book. And my wife wants to read it first! Well, I can hardly refuse her on Valentine's Day, can I now?  Wink

How lovely, Gul.
I think you should romantically sit and read it together Twisted Evil though different reading speeds can make that so frustrating!

I'm sure it's tremendous, but it doesn't sound like a good book for a couple to read together...
Gul Darr

No, I get the impression it's not quite the thing for a romantic reading aloud/together evening!

Huh! at least you get a bit of romance on Valentines Day - I had the weekend off work and did I get any romantic gestures from my other half - did I hell!

Got a bit of reading done though! Smile

Well done, Gul!  Great prize.

It may not be the cosiest or most romantic of reads, but I think it's great if a couple read it - one thing I love about Yates's writing is that he writes about men and women with equal weight, and seems to me convincing in regard to both genders.  As this is a novel about the aspirations of a particular couple, I think a joint reading is a great idea - lots to discuss afterwards!

Cold Spring Harbor is excellent, but Revolutionary Road is fabulous.  (Easter Parade is also wonderful, for the VTBR - better than CSH, I think, and almost as good as RR).

Next weekend is our romantic weekend in lieu of the one just gone as we had a family party yesterday. So we're off for a couple of days to the Chilterns. My wife and I both love walking and reading Nature Cure by Richard Mabey gave me the idea to visit that area, somewhere I've never explored before.
