Tolkien

In a recently published collection of J.R.R Tolkien's shorter tales "Tales From The Perilous Realm" I read "Leaf By Niggle".  This is is a charming story, I supppose an allegory, about Niggle the Painter, who spends his life creating a marvellous picture of a tree which proliferates in all directions.  Unfortunately he is always being pestered by his neighbours to help them out in some way. He usually helps them while grumbling about it, but it means he is unable to finish his picture.  Then he is summoned to set out on a journey.  What happens then is mysterious and open to one's own personal interpretation. A haunting tale. Nothing to do with Middle-Earth. Also included in this volume (Harper Collins H/B 18.99) are "Roverandom", "Farmer Giles of Ham", "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil" and "Smith of Wooton Major".  And his long essay "On Fairy Tales". Even if you are not a fan of Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" or "The Hobbit", you might enjoy these lightly written and mysteriously haunting stories.
