Sir Terry Pratchett

Did anyone else listen to Terry on Radio 4 this morning talking about the books that gave him great pleasure? He chose an unusual selection and you can see where he gets some of his very eccentric ideas from.
miranda

What books did he pick?

Miranda here is a link http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/epis...With_Great_Pleasure_at_Christmas/

Ann it was fascinating and I will have to listen again sometime.
Ann

I thought that too, county lady. I wished I'd written down all the books, even if I don't read them but just to be aware of them!
miranda

Thank you!
Marita

Thank you for the link county_lady.

Ann,
If you go to the BBC I-player page via the link you’ll see ‘show information’ underneath the little player screen. Click on this and the list of books read will appear.

Now it's Sir Terry Pratchett.  Very Happy
He sounded suitably humble on this mornings Today programme.

I changed the title of this thread appropriately, county lady. Laughing

Did he get a knighthood? Congratulations to him, after his longevity and popularity as an author, and his more recent highlighting of Alzheimer's and the shocking lack of funding and urgency to find a cure, I feel the knighthood is deserved.

The BBC has a short interview with Terry Pratchett and footage of him receiving his knighthood
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7896718.stm?lss

but even better is his five minute interview with Mathew Stadlen http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7861412.stm

There are many others including Martin Amis and Stephen Fry.

My son reminded me today that he once met Terry Pratchett at a book signing event in Wellington.  He drew a turtle on his Small Gods book with his signature in the middle.  In my son's wife's he wrote a little note along the lines of "All the best" or something.

Cheers, Caro.

I didn't see Terry Pratchett's Dimbleby lecture on TV last night - did anyone see it?  I am quite surprised not to have seen any mention of it among the TP fans on the board.
county_lady

Yes Evie, it was very moving. Because of Terry's condition Tony Robinson read the lecture and hubby and I thought it was an excellent presentation.
Hector

Seconded. I'm not a fan of Prachett's novels per se - on the basis that it just isn't my type of book but do appreciate why people can like him so much - but I have always enjoyed his sense of humour in anything that I have read of his. This came across throughout the lecture but at the same time it was incredibly moving and rather thought provoking. Aremarkable balance to master so perfectly.

I also thought Tony Robinson was excellent as the speaker. It reeally is worth a watch.

Regards

Hector
Evie

Thanks, both - I do intend to catch up with it on iPlayer.  I hadn't realised Tony Robinson had read the speech - I did wonder how TP was going to cope with that.  (I can't stand Tony Robinson, but it's good to know he did this well!)

Like you, Hector, I am not a great fan of the books per se - he is not a good storyteller - but the humour is great, and I enjoy them for that, and do plan to read more (I have read about 8 of them, I think).  And I like a man who combines intelligence with humour as he does.  I can imagine it was a very well-put-together speech on a difficult issue, but one that we really do need to address.
