Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea

This is a story about the sinking of a steamer loaded with people and California gold off the Carolinas in 1857, and the search for it 150 years later. Well told, with lots of period and technological detail by Gary Kinder.

I don't like the title; it sounds like a cheesy pop song. I do like the story, which is as much about overcoming mountainous (or perhaps abysmal) scientific, technical and logistical obstacles to find and get at a target lying 8,000 feet below the surface of the ocean.
