Recommendations sought for a book on the Lebanon

I'm looking for a birthday gift for my brother and as he's going to the Lebanon in the Autumn, I'm thinking of buying him a book about it.

Is anyone familiar with the area and can recommend a book on the subject?  I've looked on Amazon and there are no shortage of books but some of them seem quite heavy tomes.  I'm looking for something that is less superficial than the average travel guide but is still readable.

Suggestions please?

There are probably hundreds I've never heard of, Sandra. The best I can do is recommend that section of Mark Twain's 1869 book The Innocents Abroad, in which Twain accompanies a group of religious pilgrims through Lebanon en route to the Holy Land. It's quite good, especially if Twain's sardonic wit appeals.
