Patrick Leigh Fermor

I've just heard on the news that Patrick Leigh Fermor has died. I know many of you are admirers of his work, particularly 'A Time of Gifts' and 'Between the Woods and the Water'. Such a shame he never managed to complete this wonderful account of his trip to Constantinople, but what we had was such a delight it seems churlish to ask for more.

Oh, thanks for this, Chris - hadn't seen that news.  I recently bought the second volume, but haven't read it yet - the first one is outstanding.  It is indeed a great shame that he never finished his account of the whole journey.

I also read his book A Time of Silence (I think that's the title), about when he went to stay in a monastery in France.

Wonderful, wonderful writer.  He was well into his 90s, I think, but still sad.

There is an excellent obituary by Jan Morris in today's 'Observer'. I'm sure it must be available on-line as well.
