NZ in World Cup

Watched by a crowd of 35000 fans last night NZ has qualified for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa next year. A goal from Rory Fallon a minute before half time was enough to beat Bahrein who missed a penalty when the NZ goalkeeper made a world class save five minutes AFTER half time. The timings confirm the old saying in football that the ten minutes either side of the break are the most crucial in football.
Incidently Fallon is the son of the assistant manager of the 1982 NZ World Cup side Kevin Fallon while the current coach Ricky Herbert has done a ‘Franz Beckenbauer’ by playing in and coaching a World Cup team. Three Cheers for the All Whites occasion1  occasion9

Yes, excellent news. I'm looking forward to seeing them play in the summer.

Don't get too carried away, Gareth.  We are very happy to have achieved this (though I do feel sorry for Bahrein, who were expected and expecting to beat us) and indeed the whole country has been extremely excited about this.  (I missed the game - it clashed with a concert I was singing in - my husband understood where his loyalties went though and stayed home in front of the television.)
However, we have probably achieved our limit now - hopefully the draw won't be quite as hard as last time when we played Brazil, Scotland (and scored!) and the USSR.

Cheers, Caro.

Well done New Zealand, and with at least two of my team Barnsley's ex-players - Fallon and Bertos.  there may be more, but I am having difficulty finding a full team sheet. Oh the olden days, when Colin Walker went from being a dustman in Rotherham to an NZ international. Sounds like a film outline!

Well done NZ. Though I do hope the England Rugby team pull off a miracle against the All Blacks next week. (And it would be a miracle, on recent showing!)

As it happens Fallon and Bertos were outstanding in a team that played above themselves. The victory is still in the news headlines, receiving high praise in comparison with the All Blacks second team who are being slated for a very poor perfomance against Italy. However the first team on Saturday should be too strong for England.

Well, a Celtic player plays for NZ - Chris Killen. Unfortunately - he's crap. But then again, that can be said for all othe Celtic players...

And yes, I know NZ scored twice against Scotland in the '82 World Cup. But we scored 5 - so there!
MikeAlx

Didn't score many against Wales the other day though, did you Himadri?  Wink
TheRejectAmidHair

Shut yer face!!!
Caro

Well, it doesn't take long for a nice NZ thread to degene
rate, does it!

I haven't noticed Chris Killen particularly criticised here but it may be that NZ players are all crap really (Wynton Rufer excepted, and Ryan Nelsen, perhaps?).  Nobody is saying that today - people are still euphoric.

Cheers, Caro.

I was going to say, Himadri, that we had all remembered the 5 -2 scoreline between Scotland and NZ, but that is not quite true.  The other day in my house people were discussing this topic and someone said, "We scored against Scotland.  I think the score was 2 all."  It might have been for a while - I can't remember how the scoring went.  But people have remembered the whole event fondly and therefore apparently have put out of their memory unpleasant thoughts of losing.

Cheers, Caro.

Let us just say he is crap when he plays for Celtic... Very Happy
Evie

Caro, just remember too how good Scotland are at cricket...   Wink
TheRejectAmidHair

…but Scotland has twice won the elephant polo world championships!

(It’s true! Look it up! Very Happy )

At any rate, I’d like to congratulate NZ for qualifying for the World Cup. I’d like to … and once I’ve got over choking with envy, I probably will!  Very Happy
MikeAlx

If it's any consolation, Himadri, I do remember feeling much the same in 1978!
