Looking for something

Well...this is interesting. The other day I found myself in a group of people who had a few minutes to kill and the conversation - oddly enough - turned to books. A certain book in particular, which one fellow said his wife had devoured almost in one sitting.
'What book's that?' I asked.
'Fifty Shades of Grey', he said.

Hadn't I just the day before read on this very forum Apple vociferously denouncing the same book in as the worst-written rubbish she'd ever encountered? I was pretty sure I had.

The discussion continued:
'Oooh! I've heard of that. I can't wait to read it! I've heard it's really good!' - This from the mayor of our small town.
'Well,' says I, possibly with a smirk. 'I just read a review that said it was terrible.' It had somewhat of the effect of a bucket of cold water.

So last night I went back to Big Readers to find Apple's rant and could not find the $%#@! think no matter how hard I tried. Did I imagine it? Has it been removed? If not, where is it?

Thank you
TheRejectAmidHair

Well, when the author & publisher contact you and offer you vast sums of money to remove a review, it's hard to refuse...

Nah... Here it is:

Book reviews section. Bloody hell. Thanks, Himadri.
Apple

I will say I am in the minority of people who dislike this book, (I am the only one in my workplace where the majority of women appear to have read it!) it seems where I come from the fact there is gratuitous porn on practically every page more than makes up for the fact it is repetitive poorly written crap.
blackberrycottage

Apple, I know two at work who gave up on it, one didn't like the characters at all; and one person who finished it and isn't bothered about the other two.  I have too many better books to read.
Caro

I've only heard absolutely appalling (and appalled) views of it.  Haven't heard of any ordinary person who has read it, however.  Just radio reviewers or presenters, etc.  Dreadfully written, awful depiction of women's place in a relationship, boring etc.  Very much as Apple wrote.

But I remember people telling me I should read the Da Vinci Code because it was so interesting and such a good read.  I resisted that, due to other comments from people whose reading opinions I valued more.

Stick to your guns, Joe!

Cheers, Caro.
Apple

It is all hype (possibly due the graphic and practically constant sexual nature of it) and its that hype which is selling the book, practically everyone I know are going on about it on facebook they have either read, are reading it or have recently bought it due to hearing about it and are going to read it - and the general concensus that I have read has been how brilliant it is, in fact one of my friends was so complimentary about it I had to question whether or not it was the same book that I had read!!

But I agree with Caro - Stick to your guns Joe!!

Well thats comforting to know that I'm not the only one who hated it!! I was lent the book and told you must read it so out of courtesy I did so as I didn't actually have anything planned to read at that point and I hadn't come across it hadn't heard about it and was oblivious to the hype surrounding it at that point. Very Happy

I haven;t read this and don't intend to, and dont know anyone that has - mind you I havent asked. I always steer clear of mega best-sellers, porn or not (!), as I;ve found before that what "everybody" loves is generally of a very low common denominator. And I hate to be suckered into the money vortex when i coud buy something far less hyped and much better written instead. And if it is any good i will always find a copy of the many bought in a charity shop before long.

When I first saw this title at the top of the best seller lists, along with a coupel of other similar titles, I thoguht it might be one of those nice rueful books about ageing - the shades of grey in our hair ? Very Happy It is an example of an almighty bit of hype doing its bit and people are then curious to follow it up - a water cooler book except its facebook peopel chat on now, not round teh water cooler (how many workplaces in Britain have those anyway?? we had one one in one place I worked but they took it away when they wanted to save money!!)  We dont know how many of those people who spent money on the book actually finished it or liked it.

Apologies for my typing. Tried to correct as much as poss. I'm off work with an injured hand. I can still type but only just. And the sun is out at last!
Apple

Hope your hand gets better soon Green Jay! - Its nothing too serious I hope?

As for what you said, you are so right, this one definately ticks all the boxes of lowest common denominator possible!! Its awful (which I have mentioned several times, I'm getting as repetitive at the author!!  Wink)

No not serious, just my own silly fault, walking down the stairs carrying too many things and tripping.

I certainly won't be wasting my time on 50 Shades of Grey. I'd trust a Big Readers review over popular opinion any day. Besides, I've got a stack of Dickens waiting to be read. And it cost me peanuts. How delightful!
Apple

Well I definately take that as a compliment!  Very Happy

But good move! Also the stack of Dickens sounds a much better idea!
Ann

I've just spoken to my daughter who got it on recommendation and she agreed with you in every way Apple. She is equally mystified why it has the reputation it does!
Apple

Well I do hope that what I have read in an an online article doesn't happen, apparently there is a rumour that the author is going to re-write the trillogy but from the perspective of Christian Grey, so now if thats not milking it for all its worth nothing is! Just maybe she might use a wider selection of words if she does!!  Wink

Also there is talk of making it into a film (oh for gods sake!!) Rolling Eyes

I had been puzzled about these titles which suddenly seemed to appear in the bestseller charts, but now I feel that I can safely ignore them completely. That is what I do with 99% of what appears on these lists, in any case: they tend to act as awful warnings rather than recommendations as far as I am concerned! Thanks, Apple, your review told me all I think I will ever need to know about this series.

Then my work here is done!  Wink

I notice in today's paper, the three '50 Shades' books occupy the top three spots on the Edmonton (Canada) best-seller list. They are not in the top ten on the national list.

I can't criticize something I haven't read, but I still plan on staying away from these books. However, I might reconsider if the author herself comes to my door and offers me money.

Each time this thread appears on the New Posts page, this song immediately comes into my head and stays for hours and hours: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=507mzQGC0nk. I like it, but enough is enough now. Secretly hoping the thread dies out...

Oh, I do it all the time - it's great fun! After all, I know I don't need to taste dog turds before I can decide they're not worth eating!

Well, Well, I missed both the song & the bloke with five fingers and a thumb on one hand when viewing a favourite movie!
Literary joke inspired by this post and the thread. Why was Hall Cained? Because he refused to Marie Corelli.

I went to a party last night and the book came up in conversation. One woman said she'd read all three, couldn't put them down, but that they were really badly written so she is mystified why she was so glued to them. I was asked if I'd read them (having this reputation as a reader) and admitted that I was not interested. Perhaps it depends how much one has S M fantasies! I know there is quite a market in fluffy pink handcuffs! Personally pain doesn't do it for me!  Confused

No pink fluffy handcuffs I assure you Ann some of the stuff was quite disturbing!

The BDSM stuff was calmed down in the 2nd and 3rd book, but it does definately get in your head, I had the exact same feelings about the 3rd book in particular, I was cringing at the way it was written but I just couldn't put it down.
