Hunter S.Thompson

A documentary film on Howard S.Thompson who founded ‘Gonzo’ journalism is to be shown this week. Was he one of those writers who turned his life into an art form? Or was he a rebel with a cause?
Is he now one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century and should Board members read his books?
I ask because he is one of those writers who doesn’t appeal – maybe it is his subject matter which I understand is contemporary American society.

Do you mean Hunter S. Thompson?  I read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas a while back, and thought it was just self-indulgent.  He may have thought he was some kind of rebel, but he had nothing of any importance to say in that book.

Thanks for that Evie. In the BBC World Service interview with the Welsh artist Ralph Steadman? the Last Vegas book was mentioned. It also seems that Steadman's work helped the sales of the books he illustrated.

Gonzo journalism has never meant more to me than living your life to excess and then writing about it. Pretending it's journalism as opposed to what it is always annoys me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't quite get him! I've only ever read 'Fear and loathing...', but it didn't inspire me to read any more. We heard the Ralph Steadman interview and my husband said to me 'So what did this Thomson chap do then?'. My answer was,  'Took a lot of drugs, drank a lot of alcohol, wrote about it'. Perhaps if you are an American, it means more, but not to me.
