Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday Himadri!
TheRejectAmidHair

Thank you very much Apple - although at my advanced age, I can't help wondering whether being another year closer to the grave is anything to celebrate...

(God, I must stop reading Hardy! I'm getting far too lugubrious these days!)

Anyway - one more year and I'll be 50 - and then, I can officially become a "dirty old man"!
Apple

Blimey I didn't think you that old! (in the nicest possible way of course!) - I had you late 30's early 40's.

Happy Birthday! But what is all this nonsense about 'advanced age'? As far as I am concerned, you are still definitely in the 'toy boy' bracket! Just have a wonderful day, and keep on enjoying all the days that follow!

I didn't realise it was your birthday - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Caro

Yes, I agree with all that, Chris.  We will have to have a big celebration next year.

(Aargghh, have remembered next year means I will also celebrate an 0 birthday, and not as near zero as Himadri's either.)

Cheers, Caro.

lunababymoonchild

And not a grey hair in sight!

Fabulous collection of books, though and in a great bookcase!

Luna
Ann

and many happy returns from me too. I hope you live to see many more '0' birthdays
Evie

Himadri, you have a bookcase with glass doors!!!  I am so jealous.  I have a few collapsing Argos MDF jobs with sagging shelves and the backs falling off...though since I only brought two shelves' worth of books from my sister's, and 90% of those art history books for my job, I am feeling very severe withdrawal symptoms from my books, so am happy to have anything at all.

But yes, great bookcases, great book collection, great photo!  Hope the whisky is still flowing.
Chibiabos83

If I may invoke Monty Python, we used to dream of a collapsing Argos MDF bookcase - would have been a palace to us! My flat is tiny and many books have to make do with a place on the floor...
Evie

If I may invoke Monty Python, I am craving some  spam1.  Very bad for the diet, but I love it.
Chibiabos83

kermit

Wrong thread, but I'm reading 84 Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff, which I imagine many here would adore.
Caro

Well, I certainly did.  Though a fictional account with a happier ending would have been better!
chris-l

Thanks for the photo! I love browsing through other people's bookshelves! Whenever we go tho someone else's house (for some reason, not that often nowadays...), I always gravitate towards the bookshelves, and my husband ends up over by the record/CD collection. We think we learn a lot about our hosts - I think they consider they have learnt more than enough about us!!!
Gul Darr

Happy 49th birthday, Himadri! Now you're a perfect square  Wink
Evie

I loved 84 CXR, Chibiabos - but loved the film as much, I have to say!
TheRejectAmidHair

Evie - some of the shelf units have glass doors, some haven't. But bookshelves are like new motorways: they build new motorways to ease congestion, but they soon fill up with even more cars... No matter how many shelves you have, soon books end up on the floor and piled on top of units, etc. etc. But I do like my library looking messy and cluttered.

Chris - I, too, love being nosy and browsing through other peoples' bookshelves. (That's why I put up a full-size picture, in case anyone wanted to have a look at the titles!) Gareth has already identified the Musil. There are a few Shakespeares and Shaws quite prominent above my head - as is the volume of Shelley in the light blue dust jacket - and behind me you can see various poetry anthologies, and lots of Wodehouse. You can also see a Life of Milton quite prominently (it's by Barbara Lewalski: it's very good, but I haven't read it all yet), as well as Angus Wilson's book on Dickens, and a few more books on Shakespeare. That very thick Everyman Classics book to the left of the picture is the Complete Essays of Montaigne - which I picked up in pristine condition from our local library for only a couple of quid: that's another one I need to read in full. Maybe that could be my new reading project once I've finished my Bardathon.

Anyway - cheers all for your good wishes!
Evie

I just love shelves (almost as much as books...sad!), and *love* cabinets with glass doors - definitely something to aspire to!

I might join you for Montaigne, if/when you do embark on his essays - read bits at university, but none since, and he's definitely someone I'd like to get to know better.

Hi Himadri hope you're not suffering the aftermath of an exuberant happy birthday celebration.

Belated good wishes from me and in consolation you are 12years and 3days farther from an advanced age than I!

TheRejectAmidHair

Really? Damn! I missed that! Hope you had a great day, Caro. And now how does it feel to be a landmark?  Very Happy
chris-l

Best belated wishes, Caro! I've had a bit of experience of these landmark birthdays, myself...I've always found the ones with the '0' on the end to be a real giggle - it's just that, in the years that follow, as you gain, first a 1 and then a 2 and on and on, the reality hits you that this is real, and not the joke it seemed at first. So, I hope you had a brilliant day and that the euphoria will carry you through the years to come!
Ann

Many Happy Returns from me too, Caro. I thought of you all through my lovely Georgette Heyer course! Don't worry about the landmark, time is just a mode of thought.  Smile

Caro

Thank you all very much.  I was going to wish Evie a happy birthday but thought it was a bit much to wish her one just so I could mention mine!

Stupid that birthdays ending in 0 should seem more momentous than others, but there it is.  Fifty seemed worse than 60 somehow.  In a fortnight or so I am off, courtesy of my husband's present, to Norfolk Island, a place that might not mean much to many of you, but has convict and Bounty mutineer history, a relaxed lifestyle, nice food, beautiful scenery and warmth but not too much heat (I hope) - so I have been told.

Cheers, Caro.

Thanks everyone! I have braved the snows of Sussex to bring cream cakes to my colleagues today. Like the pony express, the cakes must always get through!

Gareth, you have surpassed yourself with the emoticons. I'm still not entirely sure what the one that looks like a blue sperm is all about though!!?

Evie, your suspicions about George and chocolate are on the money! We had to tell him my toblerone was 'daddy's big triangle', as we don't let him eat nutty stuff yet. He was content to raid a Thornton's truffle (after his advent calendar choccy, of course!).

Amongst my other presents was "Wolf Hall" and "The Little Stranger", both of which I'm looking forward to, as well as "Sapper Martin" (WWI diaries) which I think Apple bought recently.
Gul Darr

Happy Birthday, Mike! Enjoy the rest of your special day; sounds like it's going great so far.
Ann

Happy Birthday Mike. I hope you enjoy Wolf Hall. I found it quite the best book I've read this year and a worthy Booker winner.
Have a great day in the snow. We have none here!
MikeAlx

Thanks again guys. Ann, I read the first dozen pages or so of "Wolf Hall" in a bookshop recently, and it does seem right up my street.

I have Byatt's "The Children's Book" and a few other titles on my Christmas list, so will have my reading cut out for a while!

Thank you, everyone, for your wishes. I didn't get books, but I did get an awful lot of whisky, and a collection of Tarkovsky & Bresson films. And my kids have given me a walking stick - cheeky gits!
Caro

Obviously you haven't drunk enough of the whisky yet, Himadri.  You seem still able to write and spell properly.

Have a lovely weekend.  Happy birthday.

Love, Caro.
