Gilbert and Sullivan completed

I don't how I missed this, since Dunedin is just 110 kms from my home, but a Dunedin theatre company has just completed performing all the G & S operettas in sequence.  They began eleven years ago to some scepticism, and completely it this month with The Grand Duke, an infrequently performed work.  They thought The Grand Duke would have its NZ premier but found an amateur society had performed in in 1900, when presumably it was still relatively well-known.

The local newspaper talks ot this feat here:

Cheers, Caro.

The first G & S opera I saw was an amateur society production of Princess Ida and it was so well done that I went to see as many of the others when a D’Oyly Carte touring company came to Newcastle in the sixties. In NZ the most recent one I saw was HMS Pinafore with Timothy West and Prunella Scales in the cast.
Caro, you probably saw the extensive interviews on TV when any New Zealander won a medal at the Olympics so I was quite amused by an article in a local magazine which mentioned Nick Willis and Valerie Adams. The journalist managed to put in a line from Pinafore when he wrote Think of all the unpleasant news that doesn’t make the paper because there’s no room after those half-page photos of Valerie and Nick and the rowers and the riders and the interviews with their sisters and their cousins and their aunts.
