Forgotten book - Help me out here!

I don't know if amongst all the forums and sub-forums there is a dedicated place for asking questions (if not there should be - I did look but maybe I didn't look hard enough) but I need some help finding/remembering a book.

I'm pretty sure I remember reading a novel a while ago, a 19th century novel in which the heroine was either in love with or having some advances made to her by a married/engaged man. I'm fairly sure the man was married/engaged to a relative of hers, a sister or cousin, perhaps, but I could be wrong. In the end I believe she went away to live somewhere else and accordingly fell in love with another man who she met there.

Now I thought that this was North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell, but in consequence of watching the tv version the other day I started re-reading it and it really doesn't seem to be this at all, I must have got confused.

So what is it? Or have I fabricated this plotline entirely in my own mind?

It sounds a little bit like The Mill on the Floss - Maggie Tulliver attracts the attention of her cousin's fiance (though I think they are on the verge of engagement rather than actually engaged), who she meets when she goes to stay with her cousin.  But the story is a lot more complicated than that, and she doesn't go away and fall in love with someone else - the tragedy is much worse.  She is also loved by a childhood friend, who she loves but is not really in love with him.

Your plot sounds a bit like the part of the story with Maggie and her cousin's fiance, though there is more than one storyline in the novel.

I wonder if it could be a different Elizabeth Gaskell book, Thursday.  I have had a quick look at plot summaries of Wives and Daughters and Mary Barton, but am not sure if they quite fit.  You might be able to tell.

Cheers, Caro.

I know Mill on the Floss quite well and it's not that, but thanks for the suggestion. Wives and Daughters does have a plotline in which the heroine is in love with the man her step-sister is engaged to, so perhaps I have just been mixing that and North and South up in my head. I've read Mary Barton but can't remember what happens in that at all.

I'm sure I used to have a good memory for everything I'd read. Perhaps I'm getting old, because I'm starting to forget things I've read. My book group has Love in the Time of Cholera which I know I've read and not that long ago, either, because it was after the BBC Big Read but I'm having to re-read because I can't remember anything besides a bit with a donkey and the ending.

I've got like that, Thursday, and not only about reading.  I think it's since becoming a mother - I tell my kids I have so many things in my head, I can't remember everything.
