Electoral convulsion

Forgive me for foisting Canadian provincial politics on you, but after 44 years of Conservative rule in the province of Alberta, the voters have turned sharply to the left and elected the equivalent of a Labour government. Nobody, could have, or in their right mind would have predicted or expected this, in the province that is more or less the Canadian version of the State of Texas, oil, cowboys and all.

It's quite the shocker. Fun while it lasts, I guess. Is this happening anywhere else?

Not here in the UK, if the pollsters are to be believed. We look to be headed for a hung parliament or some kind of coalition. I guess the worldwide drop in oil prices must have had a big impact on Alberta's economy - is that a factor?
Joe McWilliams

Hi Mike. You would think the oil economy would be a factor, but it's damned hard to figure out exactly what, or how. The oilpatch types (many of them) are scared to death that the socialists are going to make things even worse, big companies will flee the province, and so on. All the best with your hung parliament.
Caro

It's starting to look as if it might not be a hung Parliament after all - too many Conservatives winning for my liking!

It's great to watch the BBC results live - at the moment Boris Johnson is speaking.

Yep, it's definitely going to be a slim conservative majority.

My son was one of the Count Assistants for the constituency now held by Boris.  Boris shook hands with them all before the count started.

What a coincidence. I don't think the BBC would show any pre-count pictures - on the other hand if you knew who you were looking for, it may have been possible to see your son in the background Jen, when Boris was speaking.

One of his friends said he spotted him, but I didn't.  The BBC sometimes show the count scene just before the resists are announced, so it might have been then.   I went to bed after the first few results came in, but was aware that our local results were expected at abou 4am.  I woke about 4.15, and put the TV on to see if there had been any up-date.  The Boris announcement was the first one I saw.  We don't live in Boris's constituency, by the way.
