Diana Athill

I wonder if anyone else saw the rather wonderful programme, in the Imagine series,  on Diana Athill? Now in her 90s she is still more articulate than many people ever are! The programme included many short quotes from her various memoirs, (read by Juliet Stevenson) often attached to the places she was talking about. She seems quite uncompromising in what she will say.

I have now turned back to the only book of hers I have, a memoir of her childhood, Yesterday Morning. She does not write chronologically but her obseravtions of the thought processes of childhood are fascinating. I will definitely seek out more of her books. Has anyone else read her? Stet is a memoir of her long career as an editor at Deutsch and Instead of A letter is abut her unconventional love life.

I saw a collected volume of Diana Athill's writings in a bookshop recently and it looked fascinating. To my joy, I've just looked up the library catalogue on line and discovered there's a copy of the book in my local library, so, snow permitting, I'm going to set off tomorrow and get hold if it. Looks like a great read.
