Deaths of the Poets

DEATHS OF THE POETS by Paul Farley and Michael Symmons Roberts is one of the best and most entertaining books about poetry I've ever read. The authors, who are both poets, set out on a journey to discover whether there is any truth in the generally held belief that to write great poetry a poet must live a fraught life, die young or commit suicide.  The authors travel the world visiting houses, places associated with poets such as Sylvia Plath, Dylan Thomas, Thomas Chatterton, Keats, Anne Sexton, John Berryman, Emily Dickinson, WH Auden and many others, hold interviews, consult archives, absorb atmosphere.  The end is, of course, inconclusive.  The book is beautifully written and readable, sometimes amusing, and full of stories and anecdotes.  I especially liked the story about American poet Marianne Moore who was a baseball fan and at the age of 82 pitched the first ball at the opening of the Yankees 1962 season.  A book for anyone who loves poetry.

When I saw this thread heading, Mike, I thought it must be about Derek Walcott who has died recently.  I wondered who the other poet was.
