Clarice LispectorHas anyone heard of this Brazilian author? Her novel Near the Wild Heart (1943), published when she was 23, made her a "literary legend" (according to this month's Vogue, American, not British). She is compared to Virginia Woolf - I just wondered if anyone else had heard of her and if she really is a "modernist literary tour de force" as described in the magazine. Evidently, there are large passages of Spinoza quoted in the book and I remember liking Spinoza as an undergrad. She was born to a Jewish family in the Ukraine, but emigrated to Brazil as an infant with her family.
This is about as much as I could find out about her - there is no society or anything given over to her study that I could find. There's a new biography out about her life called Why This World.
