Arnold Wesker

Saddened to hear of the death aged 83 of one of my theatre heroes, playwright Arnold Wesker. With other playwrights like John Osborne and Harold Pinter, he helped kickstart the rebirth of English playwriting in the 1950s, the reverberations of which can still be seen today. I was very much influenced by his play 'Roots' (which made a star of Joan Plowright), the middle play in a trilogy, with 'Chicken Soup with Barley' & 'I'm Talking About Jerusalem'. I vividly remember the first productions of his RAF play 'Chips With Everything' and 'The Kitchen'. I met him briefly in the 90s and somewhere I have a letter from him about 'Chips
