Alexander McCall Smith

Alexander McCall Smith is to be talking on NZ's National radio in a few minutes.  I will let you know if he says anything worth repeating.  It will be able to be accessed on radionz.co.nz

Cheers, Caro.

He is talking about setting up an opera house in Botswana - he told the interviewer she had exaggerated it a bit, as it just seats 58 people and is a tiny place putting on one opera a year.  They put on some version of Macbeth, with McCall Smith doing the libretto, and will put on something this year, with must be an adaptation since the setting will be changed to Africa.  I didn't hear (or perhaps I just didn't recognise) what it was.

The Scotland Street ones he said develop as he writes them; they are not pre-plotted.  He was asked about Bertie.  I think he feels there are far too many mothers around like Irene. I don't think he gave us hope for Bertie in the short term though.  No suggestion that Irene might have an epiphany.

He said he doesn't base the fictional characters on real people, but he does use real people with their own names in the books (with their permission).

Cheers, Caro.
